Fencing for Harvard, Lacrosse for Princeton, and Rowing for Yale?

It's a common myth that practicing certain sports can give students an edge in admissions at competitive schools.

A lot of families still believe that fencing can help you get into Harvard, lacrosse into Princeton, or rowing into Yale.

But the truth is, unless your kid truly excels in these sports…

…it won't make much of a difference in the admissions process.

College sports at top schools are tougher to get into than regular admissions.

If your kid isn't a top athlete, getting an offer is almost impossible.

Worst of all, students who spend too much time on sports commit the #1 sin in college admissions:

It’s not unique.

At the end of the day, hundreds of thousands of students play the same sports.

And tens of thousands make team captains across all high schools.

Now, don’t get me wrong, athletics have an important role in fitness and mental health.

But if a student isn’t likely to be recruited, and they'll usually know this, they should re-think how much time they dedicate to it.

Even if they are passionate about the sport…

Especially when they can use the extra time to explore and develop their own strengths, interests, and passions.

These are the elements with the biggest impact on admissions.

And that’s why I recommend students to build a Student Brand.
