The college essay that brought me to tears
637 words full of personality, passion, and achievement.
There's something every student experiences after writing their college essay:
That nagging feeling that makes them wonder if their essay is any good.
This is exactly what happened with one of my students, Brayden.
When he first showed me his essay—let's just say…
…it was a dud.
He described himself as a kid who had trouble making friends because he thought he was "too smart".
😬
Not exactly the impression we want to make on admissions officers...
Worse of all…
That's NOT who Brayden is at all!
He's a self-motivated, socially conscious student with a gifted mind who thrived despite attending an underfunded school.
We just had to show his experiences in a new light and showcase his passion-based brand.
So I suggested a few changes to demonstrate Brayden's unique gifts:
His deep understanding of math
His ability to connect with diverse peers
His talent for problem-solving
A few days later, he came back with the new version…
I got teary-eyed while reading Brayden's revamped essay because the Brayden I had come to know came to life on the page.
637 words full of personality, passion, and achievement.
It was excellent writing, yes.
But, perhaps more importantly, it came together as a cohesive narrative.
With his new essay, admissions officers would instantly understand:
Where Brayden wants to go in life
What he wants to do
Who he wants to become
They'd see how he could add something special to their campus, what makes him different than other students, and ultimately:
WHY he is who he is and WHY they should say YES to him.
If Brayden had submitted the first version of his college essay, chances are he wouldn't be enjoying his time at CalTech.
And this is just one of the many elements I help my students nail when I review their college essays...
Because the truth is, most students make mistakes like this all the time.
Mistakes that can cost them their acceptance letter at their dream school.
And if you think your teen's college application could use some expert help to avoid these mistakes…
