Jaw-dropping UPenn statistic.
Passion projects are not enough, and there’s one thing most people overlook.
I recently read an eye-opening statistic from UPenn's admissions announcement for the class of 2026...
“Nearly one-third of the admitted students engaged in academic research during their time in high school, many earning national and international accolades for research that is already pushing the boundaries of academic discovery.
Admitted students worked alongside leading faculty and researchers in their fields of interest, co-authored publications included in leading journals, and displayed their ingenuity in making connections across complex and varied disciplines.
Our faculty and fellow students across Penn’s schools and research centers are ready to welcome this latest generation of dynamic scholars who will continue to create new knowledge to benefit the world.”
Let that sink in for a moment.
And… do you notice something?
Read back the highlights and try to spot it; it’s hidden between the lines.
While we all know it's not enough for kids to simply engage in research or participate in some activities, there’s one thing most people overlook.
They must also learn to position their work and sell it!
These students weren't merely dabbling in simple projects. They were:
"Pushing the boundaries of academic discovery."
"Displaying their ingenuity in making connections across complex and varied disciplines."
They were positioning themselves as the "latest generation of dynamic scholars who will continue to create new knowledge to benefit the world."
Why?
Because with 33% of incoming students already onboard—and likely more, considering this data is from two years ago—it’s quickly becoming a requirement.
So what steps can you take?
Start by having a heart-to-heart conversation with your child about their interests and passions.
Encourage them to seek out opportunities to engage in research or other activities that align with their goals.
Most importantly, guide them in understanding the art of effectively positioning themselves in their college applications.
It could make all the difference in securing a spot at their dream school.
I’m curious to hear your thoughts on this.
Did you realize how many students gain this level of research experience in high school?
Reply and let me know!
