Does any good come from the admissions craziness?
The news does a great job of making college admissions seem like they're all doom and gloom, but is it all bad?
The news does a great job of making college admissions seem like they're all doom and gloom.
"Top student rejected from dream school!"
"Admissions rates plummet to all-time lows!"
Don’t get me wrong, these are all real concerns and a lot of the criticism is valid.
Our kids are working harder than ever to secure very elusive spots at their dream colleges.
But here's the thing…
There are also some positive outcomes amidst all the admissions craziness.
For example:
What else would our teenage and younger children focus on if they didn’t have to work hard to achieve their college goals?
Yes, in a perfect world, every child could focus on the activities they love without having to worry about how it looks on a college application.
But we don't live in a perfect world.
We live in a world of endless distractions.
Video games, social media, streaming services—they're all time vampires. Useless distractions that our kids are vulnerable to.
These activities are fine in moderation, but without the push from college goals, many smart kids might get caught up and lose their drive to succeed before they even start.
We've all seen it happen—talented, bright kids falling victim to these traps and falling behind.
If we ignore the news and forget about the applications for a second, we can see that the hard work our children put in is more than just about getting an admissions letter.
It's helping them become better people and pushing them to reach their full potential.
We may not live in a perfect world, but that doesn't mean our children have to choose between doing what they love and getting into their dream college.
They can have both.
In fact, that is THE way to do it : )
But I'm curious to hear your thoughts…
How do you feel about the college admissions process?
Do you think the hard work is beneficial, or do you feel it’s just too much?
