“Failure-target-reach” college lists

A fundamental flaw in the safety-target-reach framework.

There's a fundamental flaw in the typical safety-target-reach college selection framework.

If a student doesn’t get admitted to any of their target or reach colleges…

They will see it as a failure to go to their “safety.”

And this isn’t necessarily because it’s a bad college.

This is usually a research problem.

When labeling schools in those three categories…

The ones with higher acceptance rates tend to get neglected,  especially for the most ambitious students.

Many of these universities offer great education and career opportunities.

But if the students don’t take the time to look into them, and what these schools have to offer, they will be disappointed.

Without realizing it, most students are really building a failure-target-reach college list.

So my advice for you and your kid:

Every college on the list should be a “dream” college.

They should be 100% confident they’ll get into these colleges, and they should also be 100% excited about attending.

The problem is:

Creating this “dream” college list requires a different approach.

I call this research process “Smart College Selection” and it’s exactly what I teach in chapter 8 of my best-selling book:

“How to Win the Million Dollar College Admissions Game”

Chapter 8 also includes:

  • The six elements that need to be considered before applying for any college.

  • How to ensure your child's college life helps them flourish personally, socially, and academically.

  • How you can use the little-known changes in acceptance rates to your kid’s advantage.
