A simple hack to choose AP classes.

AP Underwater Basket Weaving?

Here’s the most common question on the topic of class selection:

“My child is in AP Bio, AP US History, AP Calculus AB, etc., should they also take AP Underwater Basket Weaving?” 😂

Okay, not the last one, but you get the idea : )

The problem is, that while it’s a valid question, it's nearly impossible to give a specific answer without full context about the student.

Luckily, I've got a simple plan you can use to do your own evaluation.

Here it is:

Rigor and grades DO matter, but taking one extra AP class isn’t going to get your child into their dream school.

When it comes to AP classes, your child should be taking:

  • Classes that align with their narrative, interests, and future major.

  • Classes they can’t wait to take in college (for whatever reason).

Simple.

Just adding random AP classes to boost “rigor” is not an effective strategy anymore.

Adding one too many can be time-consuming and stressful.

And if pushed too hard, it can even negatively impact your child’s grades.

Instead, they can invest that time by:

  • Exploring their interests.

  • Discovering their unique passions and quirks.

  • Working towards their breakthrough achievement.

So far, there hasn't been a clear way to tackle any of these activities.

And, without a path, it’s hard to take any action.

That's why I've spent the past year and a half documenting the steps and patterns that have helped my top students succeed.

Along with my 20 years of experience mentoring students… to build
